This is a very early English Staffordshire inkwell. It appears to be handmade and painted with two doves, one on either side of a tulip which is the place where the ink is poured into the well. There are two holes for the quills to pick up the ink. It has molded and hand painted flowers at the base of the tulip and a gold line around the base. There are also gold accents on the birds which are actually sitting on nests. It is in wonderful condition with some age darkening and kiln blisters on the base but no chips, cracks or repairs. It is 3 & 1/2" tall and 2 & 3/4" by 2 & 1/2" across the base. There are no marks as to the maker or original although it is definitely an early English Staffordshire piece.
